As technology continues to advance, more and more health care providers are storing their patients’ medical records digitally. While convenient, if these records are not stored properly, they are vulnerable to being exploited by a cybercriminal.
Once patient data is compromised, it is often sold on the Dark Web, where it is purchased to commit fraud, such as medical identity theft.
In a recent article, CBS News discusses the vast amount of patient data for purchase on the Dark Web. “One seller offered children’s health records for sale: “USA KIDS FULLZ” from a pediatrician from 2000 to 2014. Another posted an entire hospital’s worth of files from a health care database in Georgia: 397,000 patient records.”
